What is a yellow body cyst?
Cyst of the corpus luteum is a fairly common ovarian disease, which is often encountered in medical practice. Quite often, the disease is asymptomatic and does not represent a particular danger to the health of the woman. However, in some cases, treatment is simply necessary.
Cyst of the yellow body: the reasons for its formation
When ovulation occurs and the egg leaves the follicle, a yellow body forms in its place - a kind of temporary gland. This formation secretes hormones that prepare the uterus for implantation of the embryo and inhibit the development of the next egg. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum loses its function after a few weeks. Nevertheless, a cyst with liquid contents is sometimes formed from it. In fact, the reasons for its formation are not completely known. It was possible to find out only that changes in hormonal levels are of great importance here. The risk also increases when taking hormonal drugs, including some contraceptives. In addition, it has been proven that the corpus luteum cyst is much more common in women prone to inflammatory diseases of the reproductive organs. Some studies have also shown the negative effects of hard mono-diet on the course of the menstrual cycle. These are some of the reasons why a corpus luteum cyst is formed.
Symptoms of the disease
In fact, the cyst often does not affect the well-being of women and does not cause any external signs. Nevertheless, with the intensive growth of this neoplasm, the following signs may appear:
- If the cyst enlarges, it begins to press not only on the walls of the ovary, but also on other organs of the pelvis, including the bladder. That is why many patients complain of pain in the lower abdomen, a feeling of bloating, as well as increased urge to urinate.
- Virtually any physical activity can increase discomfort. The pain appears after sports training, physical labor and sexual intercourse.
- Cyst of the corpus luteum can also affect the menstrual cycle - prolonged periods or their prolonged absence are characteristic of the disease.
- A large neoplasm can rupture, and its contents will spread to all adjacent organs. A cyst rupture is accompanied by more intense symptoms, including severe pain, bleeding, fever, vomiting, etc.
In fact, therapy depends on the stage of development of the disease, as well as the rate of growth of the cyst. If the tumor is small, then the woman is recommended to undergo regular gynecological examination and ultrasound. Sometimes after 2-3 months, the cyst of the yellow body disappears by itself. In more severe cases, special treatment is necessary - hormonal medicines are prescribed to patients, which gradually normalize ovarian function and lead to the slow destruction of the cyst. Sometimes the only possible way out is surgical removal of a cyst. When such a formation is ruptured, there is a risk of complications, so doctors, as a rule, carry out complete excision of the ovary.
