For such a trip one day is enough, but you will not regret it. The city is beautiful at any time of the year, and many of the historical sights of Maloyaroslavets are associated with the theme of the Patriotic War of 1812.
The city of Maloyaroslavets is one of the oldest cities in Russia. It is located on the banks of the river Puddle, 60 kilometers from Kaluga, and 120 kilometers from Moscow. 1402 is considered the year of foundation of the city. It was this year that the mention of the city of Yaroslavl, so named in honor of Prince Vladimir’s son, was found in the Дух Spiritual Literacy ’of Prince Vladimir the Brave.But its roots are much deeper. Archaeological finds confirm that there were settlements of Vyatichi on these lands, and in the XII century there was a fortress on the site of the city.
When in 1485 the city was annexed to the Moscow principality (during the reign of Ivan III), it began to bear the name Yaroslavets Small, and then Maloyaroslavets. Not once did the city have to repel the raids of the Tatar-Mongolian and Lithuanian conquerors. In 1571 the city burned to the ground after the raid of the Crimean Tatars. Most of the sights in Maloyaroslavets are related to the theme of the Patriotic War of 1812, which entered into the history of the city one of the bitter and terrible, but at the same time memorable pages. An important battle took place in the city, after which Napoleon’s army began its retreat, the fate of the 1812 war was decided in that city.
The city's attractions
St. Nicholas Chernoostrovsky nunnery - this is one of the oldest buildings in the city. During the battle with Napoleon’s army, almost all the buildings of the monastery were destroyed and burned. Only the Holy Blue Gate survived. Restoration work began immediately after the war.Emperor Alexander I also contributed to the collection of funds for the restoration of the temple. Six years were spent on restoring this unique attraction of the city of Maloyaroslavets - a temple in the monastic ensemble.
On the main square of the city stands the white Assumption Church. Once it was a wooden temple, built in 1486. After 250 years, a stone church was built in its place. The one that stands on the central square now was erected in the 20th century in the Russian-Byzantine style. This amazing temple, belonging to the sights of Maloyaroslavets (pictured above), has three altars: the main church and dedicated to John the Warrior and the Transfiguration of the Lord.
Attractions on Sennaya Square
In the center of the city, on Sennaya Square, stands a monument revered by the townspeople, personifying the memory of Prince Vladimir the Brave - the founder of the city. It was performed by the famous sculptor Anatoly Artimovich to celebrate the 600th anniversary of the city, which was celebrated in 2002. But not only this attraction attracts visitors to the city. On the square there are two temples, where guests of Maloyaroslavets also strive to get, and the administration building of the city is also on the square.
If you bypass the cathedral in the name of the Icon of the Kazan Mother of God, then behind it in a small square you can see a newly erected monument dedicated to the regimental priest. In the same square stands the restored monument of 1812. It was destroyed in 1930, and a monument to the leader of the proletariat was erected in its place. When work began on the restoration of the monument, a collection of 21 medals was stored under the old foundation, which were transferred to the military history museum of the city.
Memorial to the heroes of 1812
Be sure to go to the very beautiful sights of Maloyaroslavets - the monument to the heroes of 1812. It is rather a memorial, presented in the form of a sculptural composition, which was executed by the famous sculptor Vasily Rousseau. The composition consists of an improvised rock and a pedestal with a cross, with white snow steps leading to it. The guns of the XIX century personify the guns that participated in the battle. Bronze is a cast of soldiers in the form of the Polovtsian Infantry Regiment, laying a wreath to those killed in battle. The monument is striking in its monumentality and impressive symbolism.
The place at the monument is never deserted.It is impossible not to draw attention to the bust of Kutuzov, who is ahead of the memorial-monument to fallen soldiers.
What museums to visit?
As noted above, all the sights of the city of Maloyaroslavets of the Kaluga region are in one way or another connected with the theme of the war of 1812. Whatever museum a group of tourists and visitors of the city visit, exhibits dedicated to this topic will always be met.
On the outskirts of the city there is a museum of the Grenader brewery. Guides will acquaint visitors with the history of the brave grenadiers, and with the exhibits - grenadiers made to their full height, are allowed to take a photo for memory.
