How to paint a car?

Despite the presence of a large number of car repair shops, some car enthusiasts prefer to do all the car repair work themselves, incl. and its painting.
To perform this type of work it is important not only theoretically to know how to paint the car with your own hands, but also to have practical skills. Body painting is performed in stages.
Many motorists ignore such an important moment as choosing a place to paint a car. It is impossible to carry out paint work in the open air, as the dust and adhering midges settled on fresh paint will spoil the appearance of the painted car. You can use the garage for these purposes, properly cleaning it from dust and unnecessary things before painting the car. Equally important is the quality lighting.
Before painting, the car should be thoroughly washed and dried, and then remove the decorative elements and rubber gaskets from the body. Fixed parts that cannot be painted should be sealed with masking tape or treated with a protective mixture.Disassembly of body parts is not necessary, but it greatly simplifies the process of painting hard-to-reach parts.
Before you paint the car yourself, you need to carefully examine its technical condition (bottom, rack, etc.) so that after painting you do not have to repair the car.
First, the body must be cleaned from the previous paintwork. This is done using a manual or mechanical tool. To facilitate the process, the surface of the body can be pre-coated with a washing composition.
After that, the body is checked for rust. Sections damaged by corrosion can be mechanically or physically cleaned. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of a metal brush, sanding paper with a coarse grain, or other abrasive material. To clean a large area is convenient to use the orbital machine. To prevent the formation of dust, rusty areas moistened with white spirit.
There are special acid solutions for pickling rust. After they have been treated, rust can be removed with a cloth and the surface treated with a solvent.If rust has penetrated deep into the metal, it must be cleaned beforehand.
After cleaning from the old paint and corrosion, the surface is degreased with white spirit.
Elimination of defects
If it is not possible to provide a smooth surface with straightening, it should be leveled with a putty. Layer thickness should be minimal, since the puttyimpairs the mechanical properties of the coating. For epoxy putties, the maximum deposition layer is 2 mm, for nitrocellulose and alkyd coatings - 3 mm, but it is applied in stages in thin layers.
After drying the surface is ground. To detect existing pores in the putty, a layer of powder is applied to the area. If there are pores or gaps, the putty procedure is repeated. The resulting smooth surface degreases again.
The prepared surface is covered with primer. It not only enhances the adhesion of paint to metal and protects against corrosion, but also hides the small defects left after the putty. Types of primer:
- acrylic - made on a water base, suitable for paintingall types of paints;
- epoxy - smoothes out the roughness of the putty as much as possible, provides reliable protection against corrosion;
- adhesive - provides adhesion with plastic parts of the body.
The primer is available in white and black colors and is used depending on the future color of the car. You can mix primer from one manufacturer to achieve the desired tone.
The primer is sprayed in two layers before painting the car. Layers are applied perpendicular to each other with intermediate drying.
Next, the surface of the soil is subjected to grinding with emery paper with a grain of 800 for the subsequent application of paint with varnish or 600 - under acrylic paint.
Types of paints for cars differ in their characteristics and method of application.
- Acrylic paints. Acrylic-based paints are easy to apply, dry quickly, give the surface a shine. This surface is resistant to the negative effects of the environment and ultraviolet.
- Metallic paint. The metallic shade of the body gives a layer of nitro-paint, which is applied to acrylic lacquer.
How to paint a car with a brush
The brush paints small, but hard-to-reach areas, to the appearance of which there are no increased requirements. In most cases, the brush is used to apply slow-drying paints.For staining choose flat or round brush with soft bristles.
The brush is lowered into the paint for a third of its length, and the excess paint is pressed against the edgecapacity. Apply paint back and forth in a thin layer. The brush is kept at an angle of 50-60 °.
Spray paint auto painting
The method of spraying paint with a spray gun allows you to effectively paint large surfaces. The correct diameter of the nozzle, depending on the viscosity of the paint, will allow it to be applied in an even layer without drips and irregularities.
When painting the spray gun should be at a distance of about 30 cm from the surface, and the jet is directed strictly vertically. The paint is applied with continuous uniform movements, stripes, overlapping each other by 50%.
Inexperienced car owners find it difficult to achieve the perfect result the first time. But small defects made during painting can be corrected by polishing.
